HAIR LOSS KNOWS NO GENDER

Male pattern hair loss, also known as Androgenetic Alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in men. It is caused by the effects of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), on susceptible hair follicles. DHT causes male hair loss by shortening the growth, or “anagen,” phase of the hair cycle, which results in the follicles producing progressively shorter, finer hairs — a process called “miniaturisation.” Over time, the prolonged effects of DHT will cause the genetically susceptible follicles to eventually disappear leaving you with more and more scalp visibility and eventual baldness.

Most men will experience at least some degree of genetic hair loss by age 50

Female pattern hair loss is no different from male pattern hair loss in the sense that they are both Androgenetic Alopecia, inherited genetically with DHT being the main causative factor. However, it affects women in a different pattern and the Ludwig scale is most commonly used to stage the extent of hair loss.

Illnesses that can cause hair loss

Several underlying conditions can interfere with the hair growth cycle and contribute to hair loss. In addition to autoimmune conditions like Alopecia Areata, which can damage the hair follicles and lead to patchy hair loss, other medical conditions like Anaemia can contribute to hair loss. Other autoimmune conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis or Lupus and scalp conditions like Psoriasis or Seborrheic Dermatitis can do the same. At Sage Medical Clinic, we conduct a thorough assessment of your medical history to rule these conditions out before starting any hair growth treatment programmes.

What tests are done to check for hair loss?

There are different types of hair loss, and at our hair loss clinic in Singapore, we conduct comprehensive tests to determine the cause of your condition. This includes both microscopic assessments such as video trichoscopy and physical examinations to aid with the hair loss diagnosis

Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Growth Treatments in Singapore

  • Yes, long-term or chronic stress can often bring about hair loss in the form of hair shedding. While the reason for this varies in different individuals, findings suggest that stress can impair the stem cells within the hair follicles which are responsible for hair growth. For hair growth to occur, stem cells that reside in the follicles have to divide — when this process is compromised, the regeneration of hair is impacted. However, there are multiple ways to treat hair loss caused by chronic stress, and seeking hair growth treatment at a hair specialist clinic is one of them.
